Fall is the perfect time of year to prepare your home for the colder months to come. Check out our Fall Maintenance Checklist below:
Gutters & Downspouts
Clean out all gutters and downspouts to prevent buildup of leaves and debris. Ensure water is draining properly and check that support brackets are securely in place. Family Handyman suggests using a small shovel and bucket to remove any debris, and/or to hire a professional to complete this important home maintenance task.
Applying weather strips to your doors is a great way to conserve energy and reduce your utility bill. Installing a door sweep to your exterior doors to prevent drafts and is another way to reduce your energy usage.
Landscape & Yardwork
Clear out any leaves or dead branches and shred the debris to make mulch for your garden. Give your lawn one last mow before winter for a lusher lawn in the spring. Disconnect and drain all hoses to prevent pipes from bursting and rusting!
Clean & Cover Patio Furniture
Home Depot suggests removing and cleaning patio cushions with a scrub brush and a simple solution of dishwashing soap and water. Then, move to a cool dry location for storage. For outdoor furniture, set the garden hose nozzle to the highest setting and spray furniture to loosen and remove dust and dirt. Wipe down the furniture with the same simple solution and make sure all items are completely dry before covering or storing for the winter.
Reverse Ceiling Fans Clockwise
Adjust the controls on your ceiling fan to rotate fans clockwise, at a low speed, to reduce heating costs and decrease the use of heating devices.
Clean Outside Windows
Start by rinsing windows with a garden hose. Then, fill a bucket with cold water and a few drops of liquid dish soap. Use a sponge or microfiber cloth to clean the surface and dry using a clean, rubber blade squeegee.
Wash & Clean Trash Bins
Turn your outdoor trash bins on their side and spray thoroughly. Combine 4 cups of distilled vinegar, and ½ cup of dish liquid and water. Use an extendable scrub brush to scrub the inside and outside of the trash can. Give your trash can a final rinse and leave the lid open overnight to dry completely.
Due to Maryland’s colder climate, we recommend beginning these fall maintenance projects at the beginning of the season. You can utilize it every year as a guide for your home’s fall needs!
